主題學習就像是一條線把多個與主題相關的活動串連起來，讓小朋友透過不同的活動增強他們對目標主題的認識。例如，當學習食物主題時，課室就變成餐 廳，小朋友就透過閱讀菜譜，做沙律，製造菜單，角色扮演等等以體驗多元學習經驗。主題學習增加學習趣味性，從而讓小朋友的知識、學習態度、溝通技巧均能得以發展。
Theme based learning acts as a connecting thread linking different activities around a topic in order to let children explore the content of the target theme through different ways. For example, when studying food, the children would engage in all kinds of activities centered on the theme. The classroom would be turned into a restaurant. The children might make a salad after reading a recipe, write a menu for the restaurant and even roleplay being a waitress and a customer in a cafeteria, etc. Theme based learning creates a sense of purpose for learning and a platform for communication in the classroom. It builds their interests and life experiences, so that young learners’ attitudes, knowledge and communication skills could be developed in a meaningful way.
